Apple cider vinegar, otherwise known as cider vinegar or ACV, is a type of vinegar made from cider or apple and has a pale to medium amber color. It has a lot of health benefits which most people do not know. Aside it being used in food preparation, it has a whole lot of benefits which is yet to be explored fully. In this article, I am going to walk you through the ways to use Apple cider vinegar and also educate you on it’s health benefits.



1. Acne/Pimples

Acne is one of the most common skin conditions in the world, affecting an estimated 80% of people at some point in their lives. Growing up I suffered from acne even though mine was not as serious as others. As a young adult, acne or pimples can make you uncomfortable in your own skin. Even with the help of makeup, some acne are extremely hard to cover. Pimples are part of acne and they develop when sebaceous glands, or oil glands, become clogged and infected, leading to swollen, red lesions filled with pus(the thick yellowish opaque liquid that comes out when you pop a pimple). Many factors such as genetics, diet, stress, hormone changes and infections contribute to the development of acne. Conventional acne treatments can be expensive and often have undesirable side effects like dryness, redness, irritation and sometimes bleaches the skin.

And this is where Apple cider vinegar comes in….

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is one of the numerous ways to cure acne naturally at home. Like other vinegars, it is known for its ability to fight many types of bacteria and viruses. It contains several organic acids such as alpha hydroxy acids and succinic acid which has been shown to kill and suppress inflammation caused by acnes which can cause scarring. It removes dead skin and introduces a new healthy skin.

How to Use It

•Mix 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with 3 tablespoons of water (use more water for sensitive skin to prevent burns).
•Dip a cotton ball into the mixture and gently apply it to the skin.
•Let it sit for 30 seconds to 1 minute and rinse with water afterwards. Pat face dry with a towel.
•Repeat this process 1–2 times a week or as often(not too often) as needed.

2. Stretch marks

Often times we see companies and individuals advertise stretch marks pills, cream and oil but what they fail to tell consumers or users is that stretch marks cannot be gotten rid of completely. It is close to impossible to get rid of stretch marks. What you can do is to make it fade just to reduce its harsh appearance. Some stretch marks are scary and mostly at unfavorable parts of the body. Some people’s stretch marks looks like they were slashed with “Spartacus” sword.

To fade your stretch marks and render it unrecognizable.

•Mix 1 cup of apple cider vinegar with just a little water(enough not to burn your skin)

•Dip a cotton ball or a cotton material in it and apply on your stretch marks every night before sleeping.

•Rinse or bath the first thing in the morning and Apply a moisturizer afterwards paying particular attention to the areas with stretch marks. Repeat this daily until you see good results.

FYI: You can add a considerate amount of lemon juice to it to see a desirable result.

3. Flat tummy and weight loss
One challenge most people face lately is bloated tummy. I posted an article I received from a man who wrote a letter to his potbelly yesterday(check it out on the blog). Men are not the only people who walk around with potbellies in recent times. A lot of young and beautiful ladies have inherited this too. The most painful aspect is seeing these ladies walking around town in clothes( especially crop tops) which are not supposed to be worn by people with such protruding stomach. People are consuming too much junk foods lately making them obese.
Apple cider vinegar can aid you in getting a flat tummy or even six packs and reduce weight. You can take it and do stomach exercises as well.

How to use it :
Some bloated tummies are caused by gas. For gas and bloating,
1. Drink a glass of ACV mixed with a considerate amount of water first thing in the morning. You can also drink it before each meal in a day. The vinegar helps reduce bloating because it helps in digestion so your stomach can better manage your meal. It also detoxify, cleanse the liver and support weight loss. The healing compounds in ACV which include acetic acid, potassium, magnesium, probiotics and enzymes helps one reduce body fat percentage.
FYI : You can add a little ginger if you want because ginger is also known for its stomach-soothing properties.

4. Wrinkles

As humans advance in age, wrinkles become inevitable. One can never cheat nature but can at least bargain with nature to buy more time for him or herself . Lol. Apple cider vinegar fights wrinkles and can help minimize the appearance of fine lines on the face and other parts of the body.

How to use it :

To reduce the appearance of wrinkles

• Dab a cotton ball in ACV mixed with a considerate amount of water and apply directly to age spots or wrinkles.

•Wait for about thirty minutes and rinse your face with cold water and pat dry. You can repeat this process 3 times a week.

5. Dark knuckles

Looks like roasted plantain like hands and legs have become the new trend. A single day does not go by without meeting random people with dark knuckles in town. Dark knuckles are as a result of using bleaching creams or harsh chemicals on the body. Some are as a result of sun burns. ACV can help lighten dark knuckles to give you an even skintone.

To get rid of dark knuckles,

1. Add ½ cup apple cider vinegar in 4 cup of water and apply on the sun burned skin or dark knuckles.

2. Leave it on for 10-15 minutes and rinse afterwards.

Do this continuously for 6 weeks to get desired results.

6. Lowers blood sugar levels and fights diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is a preventable and chronic disease that affects how your body controls sugar (glucose) in your blood. Medications, diet, and exercise are the standard treatments. But ACV can help acid reflux, lower blood pressure, improve diabetes and decrease your blood triglycerides.

If you want to control any type of diabetes, you might want to try taking vinegar before meals and at bedtime. It lowers post-meal and fasting glucose levels. The acetic acid in the ACV helps reduce the speed at which sugar enters the blood after a meal.
2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar before bedtime can reduce fasting blood sugars by 4%. Numerous other studies, in both rats and humans, show that vinegar can increase insulin sensitivity and significantly lower blood sugar responses during meals.

7. Dry and cracked heels

For dry and cracked heels;

Soak your feet in a bowl or tub of warm water for about 15-20 minutes.
Slough off the dead skin with pumice stone. Gently dry your feet with a towel after that.
Use a foot file to smoothen your heels and apply a moisturizer after.

8.Teeth whitener

Some people’s teeth look like it was baptized in a pregnant woman’s “urine” . It’s yellowish and so unpleasant. There are people whose own is natural whereas others got that from their eating habits or as a result of smoking.

•Use ACV as a teeth whitener by gargling with it every morning. The vinegar helps remove stains and clean the mouth and gums. You can also add baking soda and brush your teeth with it to speed up the process. ACV contains potassium that helps keep teeth strong as well.

9. Hiccups and sore throat heart burns

The sour taste of a straight teaspoon of Apple cider vinegar can stop hiccups and also get rid of heart burns. Gargling ACV can cure sore throat as well.

For heartburn, drink it as soon as you feel symptoms.

10. Bad breathe

If you are someone who likes to kiss a lot, you might as well make sure your breath is as fresh as mint. The odor that comes out from the mouth of people is sometimes capable as waking up corpses. People try to get rid of it but to no avail. You might as well give Apple cider vinegar a try.

How to use it :

add ½ tablespoon to a cup of water, and gargle for 15-20 seconds at a time until the cup is empty. You can add lemon to it. Please note that lemon can be bad for the teeth so use in small amount.

Use apple cider vinegar for a healthy throat. Mix 1/4 cup ACV with 1/4 cup of warm water and gargle the first thing in the morning and the last thing you do before you sleep.



Apple cider vinegar contains ash which normalizes your body’s pH and maintains a healthy alkaline state.

      Hi Iris, yes there are side effects but that only happens when the right amount of water is not added to the Apple cider vinegar. As you rightly said, it’s acidic therefore one can suffer from throat burns,skin irritation and erosion of tooth enamel if you do not follow the right procedure. Thanks .
