“I am a decent man who exports flowers” he famously said. In Escobar’s mind, the ‘Colombian powder’ business was just a normal money-making venture. Founder and head of the ‘MEDELLíN CARTEL’ which is named after his place of birth in Colombia. Easily the wealthiest man on the face of the planet but was denied this tag due to the dirty means through which his money was made. With only $50 billion worth of his assets recorded. Perhaps a smarter criminal than Larry Hoover.
It is reported that EL PATRON decided to venture into the drug business due to the higher risk involved in dealing with other contrabands and also human trafficking. He saw drugs specifically cocaine as a lucrative business due to its high demand outside the shores of his native Colombia. He developed bases and routes near airports and harbors with the help of his right hand Carlos Lehdar. Due to the high revenue being generated, he was able to put up his famous mansion called ‘HACIENDA NáPOLES’ which was stacked with expensive vehicles of all kinds, cash storehouses and a zoo with exotic animals like Bengal tigers and white lions to name a few. EL PATRON was responsible for 80% of cocaine shipped into the States spanning from the late 80’s to the early 90’s. And in this period, he was the most wanted man overseas. But what made Pablo seem invincible was that he was backed and protected by the Colombian government due to the funds he was pumping into their administrative affairs and was also loved by the citizens due to his Charity work. Added to his large and well strapped unit of guards, Pablo was almost impossible to reach. But what made him the most wanted was not the charity works He did in his homeland but rather his ruthless mindset towards getting the job done even if it meant taking lives which led him to killing numerous government and law enforcement officers. He could easily switch locations due to his reported 147 mansions scattered across the globe.
At the height of their operations, the MEDELLíN CARTEL and their famous leader could make $70 million per day which is equivalent to $26 billion in a year. Numerous attempts had been made to capture Escobar but these attempts only infuriated EL PATRON because he retaliated by either killing a top government official or killing a whole swamp of people on his tail. There were short-lived victories anytime he was tracked down due to the fact that he will escape sooner or later and comeback even stronger. He broke out of prison on countless occasions with relative ease that he could afford to smile in his mug shots knowing he would not stay for very long.
Eventually, his relationship with his native people took a turn for the worse as his gangbanging activities brought further bloodshed and soured the relationship. This made EL PATRON a lot less untouchable since he lost the shield of his people giving the outside world hope that the GODFATHER could be dethroned. His reign of terror continued until December of 1993 when one of his numerous hide outs were raided by law enforcement officials. There was heavy gunfire exchange between Escobar himself along with his guards and the government officials which eventually led to EL PATRON being shot dead in the ear. It is unknown whether it was self-inflicted or crossfire.
There might be modern day pretenders like Joaquin Guzman “EL CHAPO” Loera but the GODFATHER’S reign was unmatched and a true reflected of the power of money and a man with drive and strong beliefs.
