RAPPERHOLIC 2018 CHRONICLES: A PROPERLY WRITTEN ACCOUNT OF THE GOOD, BAD AND UGLY CAPPED WITH THE BEST.
Sarkodie at the Rapperholic 2018.
I went to Rapperholic 2018 not as a journalist but rather as an overzealous concertgoer with so much expectation just like everyone else who came to witness this particular event, with hopes of enjoying every time spent at the venue. But right from the gate I was disappointed. Inside and outside the gates was overcrowded with folks who were eager to go in and witness a great show. The number of people outweighed the number of security personnels at the gate. Also, I witnessed a fight between a bouncer or probably a security personnel and a guy who wanted to force his way in even though the security guys kept telling him to take his time. The security guy ended up slapping the guy because he was becoming a nuisance and it looked like he was on drugs. For a minute, I was scared for my safety because it was my turn to be cleared so I could go in and seeing as they were sharing slaps like free WiFi, I had to protect my cheeks. So Because of this particular guy, the queue came to a standstill just so they could discipline him. If there were enough security agents, that guy would have been whisked away with ease. In cases like this, the concert goers become frustrated and impatient. Also I believe there is more than one entrance at the Accra International Conference Centre , therefore the other entrances should be fully utilised incase rapperholic is hosted there next year(which I doubt). This is because Regular,VIP,VVIP ticket holders all had to use one entrance and later two(at the entrance leading to the main auditorium) which in my opinion was not ideal. Different queues should be created for different ticket holders so there is transparency and quick movement. I can even bet on the fact that some regular ticket holders were sitting at the VIP section , making some VIP ticket holders sit at the place meant for regular ticket holders. Which is so unfair. I had a VIP ticket but I had to go upstairs just because I did not get any place to sit at where I was meant to.
POOR MCING ESPECIALLY BY NANA ABA ANAMOAH AND ABEIKU SARKCESS AT THE RAPPERHOLIC 2018.
Ace broadcaster, Nana Aba Anamoah goofs on stage at Rapperholic 2018.
OgeetheMC has over the years proven himself beyond doubt to be a great Master of ceremony(MC) at events He should have been allowed to do more of the work. Rapperholic is built around a rapper and rap requires so much energy so measuring the show in ‘joules’ when it comes to the Mc’ing department , it was not the best at all. The crowd was a hyperactive one if not, it would have been boring. Nana Aba Anamoah was not her usual eloquent and free-flowing self on the Rapperholic night. She goofed right from the onset. First of all, she was late to the event, secondly her entry was unimpressive and thirdly once she made a mistake by indirectly saying Africa is the biggest continent(Asia is the biggest continent), she was not able to fully recover. It looked like she had not rehearsed plus she appeared nervous too. Instead of admitting that she goofed, take a deep breathe and come back stronger, she tried to make excuses but the audience was not having none of it. She committed a series of blunders and because she failed to admit it, she kept making more like ‘equating 200 seconds to 2 minutes’. My Mathematics is poor but I definitely know that 200 seconds is 3 minutes, 20 seconds and not less than 2 minutes. A lot of folks were disappointed because they knew Nana Aba as one who had a great command over the Queen’s English but I guess she proved to all of us that we can adopt someone’s language but it can never be fully ours. Her introduction for Sarkodie was poor too plus inviting those ladies on the stage to dance was totally unnecessary, it looked more like objectifying women rather than entertaining. I am sure she realised the extent of damage done so she never made it back to the stage again. Looking at all these things and more, I’ll give the overall Mcing a 3/10.
OPENING PERFORMANCES AT RAPPERHOLIC 2018.
Don Itchi did great. His freestyle and everything was on point. As an upcoming artiste, I believe if he continues like this he will get the needed breakthrough.
Epixode was energetic but he still has a lot more work to do on building a fan base or getting people to love and appreciate his talent and craft because he is really talented. He’s been in the music industry for quite some time now but it looks like every time he mounts the stage, he still has to go the extra mile to get the attention of the audience. Even his somewhat popular song ‘avatar’ still could not do the magic.
OVERSELLING OF RAPPERHOLIC 2018 TICKETS (GREED OR IRRESPONSIBILITY).
As an event organiser or headliner your consumers/customers/patrons/fans well-being and satisfaction should be your number one priority, something the Rapperholic 2018 organizers failed at. Overselling tickets and therefore overcrowding the venue could result in a stampede should there be an emergency such as a fire outbreak. Sarkodie and his team should do better next year because the venue took twice the number of people it was suppose to take.
DJ MENSAH’S DJING SKILLS AT RAPPERHOLIC 2018
The untouchable was touched at the rapperholic 2018 concert.Though his laptop going off was a contributing factor but he looked confused at a point like things were not going as planned. It disrupted the show to some extent but he eventually recovered and delivered as expected.
POOR VENTILATION AT RAPPERHOLIC 2018.
The issue of event centres being poorly ventilated, has been one of a great concern for years. Industry stakeholders have talked about this on countless occasions but it looks like it is not much of a concern for those in charge of the event centres. In Ghana, our maintenance culture is appalling. Also, the people who are in charge of maintaining the Conference centre should be ashamed of themselves. Their selfish interests and turning a blind eye on the obvious could lead or even led to casualties. People were suffocating but majority endured it because of the love they have for Sarkodie. It could have been worse and people could have collapsed as a result of exhaustion.
TABLE RESERVATION FOLKS AND VVIP TICKET HOLDERS
Majority of the people who reserve tables at concerts or purchase VVIP tickets are very boring. Concerts like Rapperholic 2018 centres on energy and artistes who mount the stage to purchase feed off the energy and support they get from the crowd. So if ‘table reservers’ and VVIP ticket holders would not get up to dance, sing or support them then they have no business being right in front of the main stage. If I had my way, table reservers and VVIP ticket holders will rather sit somewhere in the middle and not the front because they discourage the artistes.
SARKODIE WAS NOT IN THE BEST SHAPE TO PERFORM AT RAPPERHOLIC 2018.
This point is disputable because Sarkodie came in with full energy but any observant person could clearly see that he was exhausted and not feeling well. He had lost his voice and probably had a flu. If all these are correct then to some extent he really tried his best. He had mounted a lot of event stages to support his colleagues back to back and this is not ideal for someone who had his concert scheduled a few days away. He was at Manifest’s ‘manifestivities’, Kofi Kinaata’s ‘made in Taadi’, Medikal’s concert at the West hills mall etc…. Eventhough he was only trying to support his colleagues, I deem it wrong. Sometimes one has to be a little bit selfish and that is what I would have advised Sarkodie to do especially because he was still trying to regain his lost voice. To some extent, I can not fault him too much because although it was not one of his best performance, it was certainly not the worst either because he still came through for his people. Also, the poor ventilation in the auditorium had him gasping for air. In my opinion( I mean well), I think Sarkodie needs to workout a lot and check his weight otherwise in future it will cast a slur on his stage performances. This is not to body shame him , but as an artiste his weight gain should be of great concern to him because it can mess up his breath control.
These were basically the negatives surrounding Rapperholic 2018. Now let’s move on to the positives ………
THE THREE KINGS MADE AN APPEARANCE AT RAPPERHOLIC 2018.
Kwesi Arthur, Kidi and Kuami Eugene brought a whole new energy on the Rapperholic 2018 stage. I call them the new kings because they have mapped out and established their place in the music industry and deserve all the attention they are getting. They literally lit up the place and got close to everybody on their feet dancing and singing along to all their songs. You know when you have women hyping you, it is a whole new feeling(If you doubt, ask David how he felt when the women were praising him after he killed Goliath in the Bible) and the ladies truly love Kidi, Kuami Eugene and Kwesi Arthur. I like the fact that Kwesi Arthur shared his platform with his brothers also associated with ‘Ground up’. Kofi Mole, Twitch,Kwesi slay and Quamina Mp joined him on stage to perform songs they featured Kwesi Arthur on and it was a beautiful experience. Criss waddle also joined him on stage and they performed their song ‘King Kong’. Captain Planet also joined Kidi on stage and they also performed their hit single ‘Miss you die’. Kudos to these three gentlemen.
THE PEN AND PAPER BOYS (SHAKER AND KOJO CUE)
Looks like the joint or collaborative effort by Shaker and Kojo cue is really working for them. These two together shook the stage with their hit songs especially Shaker. The crowd sang along joyfully.
AKWABOAH’S SOOTHING YET ELECTRIFYING PERFORMANCE AT RAPPERHOLIC 2018.
Most often, highlife artistes do not get the reception they deserve or require during their performances especially on big stages like Rapperholic 2018. But surprisingly, Akwaboah was able to reach out to the people. I have been a fan of Akwaboah even before most Ghanaians got to know him and his music so I was glad that people were gradually appreciating his talent and craft. He wooed the ladies especially with his soothing voice and soft-like personality on the stage. His connection with the band was impeccable. Unlike his label mate strongman who needs to work on his stage presence, Akwaboah really pushed the right buttons and it worked for him. He even acknowledged it and appreciated the love he got from the audience.
SARKODIE PERFORMING ‘BIIBI BA’ TRACK WITH LYRICAL JOE, TULENKEY, KOFI MOLE, FREQUENCY, TOY BOI, AMERADO, YEYO, 2FINGERS, OBKAY AND CJ BIGGERMAN AT RAPPERHOLIC 2018.
Sarkodie performs ‘Biibi ba’ at rapperholic 2018 with Lyrical joe, Tulenkey,Kofi Mole,Frequency, Amerado,Obkay, CJ biggerman,Toy boi, 2fyngers and Yeyo.
This performance in particular warmed my heart. Reason being that, It was a great feeling to see all these upcoming acts performing with Sarkodie. Rapperholic is a huge platform and this will go a long way to boost their respective careers. The crowd cheers them all as they all delivered their bars. Tulenkey who has a 2 banging singles ‘I like it’ and ‘Fxck boys’ had the opportunity to perform solo and it was nice to see and hear the crowd sing and dance to his music as he did his thing on stage.
REUNION OF THE 90s AND EARLY 2000s HITMAKERS AND LEGENDS.
The crowd went agog when Ex-doe,Chicago,Tinny,Bright(Bukbak),Akatakyie, 5five, T blaze, Stay Jay and Nana Boro mounted the stage to perform their hit songs. It evoked nostalgic moments from childhood and it was so good to see most of them after going AWOOL. I can go on and on about this in particular because the excitement was overdose.
LA MÊME GANG,JOEY B, PAPPY KOJO AND WENDY SHAY
The above mentioned names did great. La même gang with a combination of Joey B was crazy in a positive way. La même gang’s style and energy on stage is commendable. Whenever Joey b and Pappy Kojo meet on stage it is all fun. They did their thing too and had the crowd up on their feet. Also Wendy Shay’s performance at the Rapperholic 2018 concert is the best I have ever seen of her(2nd is her performance at this year’s Miss Malaika). The energy with which she came with on the stage was awesome and did the trick for her.
EFYA , SARKODIE AND AMAKYE DEDE’s PERFORMANCE AT RAPPERHOLIC 2018
Efya is a great performer and she proved that again at Rapperholic 2018. When you have Efya and Sarkodie performing together, the chemistry between the two of them alone is enough to get you excited. They sang a new song they have recorded together and it is definitely a good one. But my best performer and performance in general on the night (or dawn) was that of the Legend Abrantie Amakye Dede. He is over 70 years and his energy keeps shooting up. He exerts more energy than most of these new artistes and he shook up the entire auditorium. His stage presence, craft, voice dexterity, control over the band, call and response with the audience etc…. was on point. Amakye Dede is a Legend and a real gem. His brief performance with Sarkodie was good too as they gave the audience a preview of a song they have together.
Artistes like Mr Eazi, King Promise and others were also there to support Sarkodie.
The stage set up was good. It was not over crowded and I was impressed especially with Sarkodie’s entry.
I have heard some people who watched the event at home criticise the lighting but I believe majority of the people who attended Rapperholic 2018 will have positive things to say about it. The lighting system to me was good. It was not too much and I’m grateful for this particular reason because lights produce heat and most of the air conditioners were not functioning properly. Therefore more lights would have created additional heat and made the audience uncomfortable.
THE PRESENCE OF HOLLYWOOD ACTOR AND PEOPLE’s 2018 SEXIEST MAN ALIVE, IDRIS ELBA, INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALLERS EMMANUEL ADEBAYOR AND EMMANUEL AGYEMANG BADU, GHANAIAN POPULAR PERSONALITIES LIKE SANDRA ANKOBIAH,KOD,SERWAA AMIHERE, JAY FOLEY ETC…. AT RAPPERHOLIC 2018.
British born, Hollywood actor Idris Elba was at the AICC to witness the Rapperholic 2018 concert and this to me is a great deal not only for Ghanaian music and the industry but also good for tourism. I was a bit worried about him because of the heat in the auditorium but it looked like he was enjoying himself as he was on his first feet jamming whenever Sarkodie came up on the stage and as well as other artiste performances. Other celebrities also came out to support Sarkodie and cheer him on.
In all , Rapperholic 2018 was a good show but just not the best as compared to the previous years. The diversity and performances from some of the new artistes, the older artistes, the undying love and support from the audience did not let the show end on a bad note. Despite all the challenges, the audience were certainly thrilled and I want to believe the money spent on the ticket did not go waste. Most of the Sarkodie fans stayed in the heat right from the start to the very end and did not move an inch. That’s loyalty. I’ll give the show a 6/10. Was tempted to give it a 5 but I think the effort put in to salvage the whole situation deserves a worthy mention.
Angel, manager of Rapper Sarkodie apologizes to fans and Rapperholic 2018 attendees, says ‘seeing people go through the same struggles from last year, defeated his spirit’.
Angel, Sarkodie’s manager has issued an apology for the hitches they faced on social media.
Sarkodie has acknowledged criticisms and will certainly release an apology soon.
But next year, change of venue is not up for a debate for the Sarkcess music team because it is a must. The stadium might not be conducive for people like myself who do not like events hosted at open places and prefer concerts in an enclosed area. The team should consider the Fantasy dome next year because Sarkodie and his fans are beyond the AICC and the same mistakes should not be repeated.
Congratulations to Sarkodie and the organizers of Rapperholic 2018. More room for improvement.
